Chiptunes

An ever-changing Game Boy soundtrack. Listen, play, and open the music in an approachable tracker.

New songs all day, made with the Game Boy’s own four-channel sound, with little games playing along. Open the tracker if you want to change a note. Export a ROM if you want to take it further.

Ask for a song, then change a note.

An agent composes a score you can read. Open any note, pick a different sound or motion, and the arrangement updates. Undo if you preferred it before.

Take the song out of the browser.

Export it as a Game Boy ROM for an emulator, or as WAV, LSDj or MIDI for whatever you use next. The song stops being a web page and becomes a file you can keep.

Why I made it

Chiptunes started as a way to see whether I could make games with AI and have them react to music. The retro radio came quickly. What kept me going was the feeling of the Game Boy itself, and a vaguely retro generator was never going to give me that.

So it uses the machine’s real sound: every note runs through a register-level emulation of the Game Boy’s four-channel chip. That decision is what made a real tracker and a real ROM export necessary. Most people will just listen and play, and that is the point. The depth is there for whoever wants it.
